DRM, do we really need it?
DRM = Digital Rights Management (Definition: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&oi=defmore&defl=en&q=define:DRM)
Recently Mark Russinovich of Sysinternals (Website: www.sysinternals.com) posted on his blog about finding a rootkit that was installed on his system from a CD put out by Sony BMG (Mark's blog: http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/). With the chatter this produced in the tech world this news eventually bled over into the land of the non-geeks media websites (Example: http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/internet/11/10/sony.hack.reut/).
I hope this will bring light onto the situation that DRM is putting us into, where you can't play your legally purchased CD without restrictions we never had in the good old tape days (BTW, I never liked tapes - I didn't start buying music until CDs came out). Unfortunately, I believe that nothing will come of this because the news media companies are owned by the entertainment media companies. I sound like a conspiracist.
